Super Bowl (Commercial) Fever

These days all we are hearing about is the upcoming election. This is all very important (of course), but today I am giving you a break from the every day crap slinging, blow hards. Ouch that was kind of mean.

Anyhoo, today on the radio I heard about her.

This girl is a single, New Yorker who is looking for a husband. Forget about The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, and any other dating reality show. This girl is trying to raise 3 million dollars for a thirty second Super Bowl commercial. An interesting idea. She is not picking the Super Bowl audience because she loves football and athletics in general. She is looking at this as a numbers game. Where else in the world can you find that many men watching the same thing?

I have to say, I am worried for this girl. Think of all the crack pots out there. Think of all the drunk Super Bowl watchers.

She is only at $2000 so far, but she has already been on the Today show twice. If you send her $10,000 you will get an invitation to her wedding. If she does not raise the amount to buy a spot, she will donate the money she has raised to the United Way.

OK, discuss.....

Top Secret Info.

Ssssshhhhhhh.

I now know the secret of how to win a soccer game.

B told me after her game on Saturday (Win: 4-1).

B plays defense for the most part. She has a mean kick when she gets her foot on it. Evidently she gets in the heads of the other players, too.

For example, there was a girl on the other team who B has played against forever. This girl is very good, unfortunately her team is not so good.

I told B I was impressed with the way she took the ball away from this girl a few times. This is where the big secret comes in.

She said, "Well, yeah, I talked her up."

Me with the inquisitive look.

B, "When she is coming at me with the ball, I will ask her a question like how is school? Or who is your teacher? This throws her off her game long enough for me to take the ball. She told the ref I was talking too much, but he just told us to play the game."

So there you go NFL, MLS, NHL players. There is no need to say anything nasty to the players on the other team. Just ask them about home life, what they did the night before and ask them if they have read anything good lately.

Problem solved, game won, the end.

Vote for.......

Here is a fun questionnaire that my sister sent to me from ABC News. You chose between two statements and at the end it tells you if you were more in line with Obama or McCain. It is pretty interesting and the picture of the 2 on the seesaw in front of the White House is quite amusing. And you don't have to tell me your answers. Think of this as a public service announcement.

Smuckers

B and I picked up the mail as I was driving her to school this am. She sees the Smucker's Stars On Ice brochure. Stars on Ice as in previous Olympic skaters, excellent skaters....great show.

She says, "Smuckers Stars On Ice? Is that a show of all those old people that guy wishes happy birthday to on the Today Show?"

Honestly, it stuns me the way her mind works.

Wreath Making 101

My mom and I went to a class downtown yesterday on seashell wreath making. I thought it would be fun and figured there was a glue gun in the picture. (Is there more fun than using a glue gun? I think not. )

So we went planning on making a Christmas present and knocking someone off our list. What we did was make ourselves a wreath and said to hell with our Christmas present list. Maybe if we collect some shells on the beach in the next month, someone else will get one of these beauties.

You're impressed, right?

BTW, mine looks great against my blue kitchen wall, thanks!

Wellfleet Oyster Festival

Yesterday we went to the Wellfleet Oyster Festival. I would have written about it last night if my fingers weren't still frozen. Brrrrr, it was COLD! We had on layers, scarves and mittens! It wasn't so much the temp as it was the wind blowing through the town. Anyway, we did have fun and my dad had his share of oysters. (Yeah, married to a fisherman, don't like shellfish, that's irony for you).

My dad likes his oysters with hot sauce and horseradish. Very nicely presented, Dad.

This is a little church in the town center. I don't think it is a church anymore, but I love the doors anyway. The festival is always this same weekend every year if you want to plan on coming with me next year. Just bring mittens and lots of layers!

Bus Stop

B and I were waiting at the bus stop this morning alone. We talked for awhile and then spaced out into the cars/trucks driving by. I was thinking how I was getting everyone where they needed to be this afternoon and evening. (I still haven't figured out how I am going to accomplish this.) B looks at me and says,
"I bet I know what you are thinking."
me, "I don't think you are really thinking about how I am getting you and K here and there this afternoon."
B, "Yeah, you're right. I am thinking about pollution. Look at all these cars and trucks going by. More people should be riding their bikes. This is serious stuff, Sue."

This is serious stuff Sue? Where the heck does she get this stuff? She should be running for President.

Halloween in August?

I went to Target today with my friend Amy. I puffy heart Tar-jay and so does she, so it made for the perfect outing! I wound up with socks, but my kids scored some cool stuff and of course I got Halloween candy.

Mind you, I get no trick or treaters at my house.

Still, I get the candy.

So does Amy.

K wants to set up a spooky trail ride for some of her friends, so she asked me to get some Halloween stuff to hang off the trees. Sure, K, no problem.

I must back up and say I don't really enjoy Halloween. Yes, I have fond memories of trick or treating with my brother and sister and sorting all our candy when we got home, and then trading it, and then keeping it hidden in my closet and making it last until Christmas. The whole costume thing disturbed me... the sweaty plastic masks, the snow jacket under the plastic costume, the not knowing who was coming up to you, the year my mom dressed me in a trash bag and called me a raisin, and on it goes.

So, in Target today I sauntered over to the Halloween section and was floored by how large it was! There were costumes, decorations, candy, goodie bag treats, talking candy bowls, large Frankensteins, an adult's chicken costume and more candy. Remember in the 70's when you just walked into KMart the week before Halloween and bought your plastic costume in a box and a few bags of candy?

Now, you have to plan your costume in August because what you want will be gone by the end of September.

The good news is, the Christmas decorations were starting to appear in the back corner.

Brace Face

Daughter #2 now has braces.

Here is her mug shot with her lavender and lt. blue bands.

I mentioned to my mom I was never going to be able to send them to college now.

B said to me that I better start saving because she is going to Harvard Med School.

Let's hope that smile and brain get her a lot of scholarships!

Just Your Average Middle School Day

K had a substitute teacher today, who she has had in the past, and has a penchant for texting.

Whatever.

Anyway, this gave K and her friend a little extra time to perfect their desk area. They sit at tables and evidently one of their male table mates takes up too much space with papers, books etc. So K and her friend ripped up a piece of white paper and formed a border around "their space". They told him that the rule was anything that is on or over the white line will be thrown away.

I asked K how that worked out.

She said she almost had to throw away his elbow.

Not for Vegetarians...

This weekend we had a piggy experience. No, not this piggy experience,

but the opportunity to eat a pig from a spit. One of my dear friends is walking in a 3 day breast cancer walk and was having a party to raise some money for the cause.

The pig master out did himself! He put 4 chickens in the cavity of the pig and cooked them all together. Kind of gross to think about, but very tasty to eat! And B made a friend!

Straight from the Horses Ass

The Budweiser Horses came to Cape Cod this week! If you have ever seen a Clydesdale (or had a Bud) you would know how exciting this was! Clydesdales are HUGE horses and are beautiful, too. We went to see them in Hyannis in the KMart parking lot where they were under a viewing tent for a few days. They had just fed the horses, so we got the ass view while the people that fed them got the pretty head view. Nothing like 8 asses staring at you.

Fast forward to Saturday when they were scheduled to parade down Chatham's mainstreet. We went and saw them getting lined up in front of the Bud carriage. This took F-O-R-E-V-E-R, by the way. But it was interesting to see how patient the horses were getting all geared up. (More patient than I ever would have been!)

Here are the first 2 of the 8.
Is this not a beautiful horse?!

2 more added on....The garb they were wearing was quite fancy and I think the horses knew how great they looked!

Their hooves were gigantic!
Here they are coming down Main Street in Chatham. Very impressive and the crowd was enormous! You would have thought the Jonas Brothers or Brad Pitt or Tom Brady was coming to town!
Sadly enough, there was no Budweiser thrown off the side of the cart to the parched fans waving.

There was, however, the infamous Dalmation sititng right up top with the drivers!

French Food

Setting: Car

Who?: B, K, my mom and me

When: After school

What the heck?:
B started telling us how the gym teacher taught health today and the topic was healthy eating. The kids were handed menus from the Squire (a local restaurant) and were told to pretend they were eating out and pick what they wanted. Then they were encouraged to think ahead, way ahead... They had graduated college and were now Nutritionists. Donald Trump was coming for dinner and the kids had to make a menu knowing his health issues.

B was chosen to read her menu out loud. She gave him Ceasar salad, a fruit cup, steak, V8 juice and some other stuff. Very good, A+.

Then a boy in the class was chosen to read his menu out loud. He had the whole class in stitches because (according to B) he was feeding the Donald everything on the menu. Including 30 Bud Lights for his beverage. Mr. W., the gym/health teacher, said that the Donald would not exactly be eating the best foods and therefore the boy in the class was "fired" from his nutritionist position.

B says to us, "I didn't know french food was so bad for you!"

My mom says, "I didn't know the Squire served french food."

B says, "Yes they do. Practically everything on the menu! Like they had soup DU JOUR, vegetables DU JOUR......"

I swear I can't make this stuff up! She knew that du jour was french, she just didn't understand it meant 'soup on the day',' vegetable of the day'....

No Captain Crunch Before the Orthodontist!

Phew, what a morning!

Today was picture day, so last night we spent some time finding the "just right" outfit. Because I take so many pictures of my kids, school pictures do not really phase me. I find it more amusing to let the girls pick what they want to wear and how they want to wear their hair. Of course when they get older and say, "I can't believe you let me wear that...."!!!! I can say, "Hey, you picked it"!

Back to this morning, both girls get up and get dressed. B had an early morning orthodontist appt so we were out of the house at 7:15. (It takes a good 45 minutes to get to the ortho.) It was her "consult" on getting braces. She has had a few different apparatus in her mouth already and we were just waiting for all her grown up teeth to come in before the braces went on. I thought it was just a chat on how much money we had to pay. I forgot that B had to have impressions of her teeth made with icky pink goo. So while I was being picked up off the floor in the business office, B was puking on herself and the fabulous dental assistants in the treatment room. And yes, it got on her outfit, the special one she picked for pictures.

Many tears later and an appt. for next week to get the full mouth of braces, we assess the outfit and decide that she can not wear this for pic. day. We have to go through Hyannis on our way home. It is the shopping mecca of the Cape. That means it has a mall and some stores that the rest of America has heard about. Of course the only thing open at 9- was KMart. Well, she tried on some "hip" clothes, but they were not making the "Picture Day" cut. We got out of there and headed to Old Navy, which thankfully was open. She got a pair of jeans and a striped shirt that she felt good about.

Some might ask, "Why didn't you go home and get an outfit from her closet?". Good question, but she was so broken up about the puking that I thought a little shop therapy would do her ego good before I sent her to school. Plus, she had dissed everything else in her closet last night when she was looking for the perfect picture day outfit.

From what she told me, she survived picture day. Phew.

After school she tried out for the school's jumprope team and made it! YAY! I am not sure who was more excited, her, or her friends already on the team! It definitely gave the day a positive ending to a rather rocky start!
