No More Teens

When I began this blog, B was 9, K was 10. You and I have watched them grow through this online journal of sort. For many, many years, my moniker was mom to two teens. Well guess what? Those tweens that became teens are now officially both in their twenties. That's right! B is 20 today.  I'll wait for another time to discuss how weird it is to have a 20 and 21 year old. Today, we celebrate B!

Dear Cookie,
You have really come into your own this year! You have always been determined to get things done, but this year I have noticed you taking your own future in your hands. You are not afraid to ask for help which is such a sign of maturity.

Of course I had to read all the birthday posts that I have written for you over the past 10 years. They are all similar. I mention your smile, your laugh, your singing and your inside and out beauty. However, looking at pictures of you, I realized how cute you are in hats!! Quite the fashionista :) Maybe Santa will bring you a new one!

Love you honey! Hope this year is the best one yet!!

It's B's Birthday

Dear Birthday Girl B,
19.
Wow.
It is hard to imagine that you are 19 when I still think of you around this age.

I am glad that H and I could surprise you at college last night! Speaking of college, I know that the beginning was really hard for you. I know how hard it was for you to "adult" on your own. It's hard managing living on your own (laundry, meals, keeping your own room) AND friends, schoolwork and managing that free time. But you have done it! And that is what you need to be proud of. Many things that are hard to accomplish are more appreciated in the long run. Less than 2 weeks and you are finished with semester number 1! That is unbelievable!! You have rocked it, well maybe not every day, but many days. It was fun to hang out with you and your friends today. I am blessed and overjoyed to be your mom. And believe it or not, all this college business was just as hard for me as it was for you!

I love you !!!!

"Cookie"

Today I have a 15 year old whom I still call "cookie".

She swims, she's funny and she's a great friend.

She's smart, she's sarcastic and she's beautiful (on the inside and out).

Her year as a 14 year old was trying (to say the least) because of situations out of her control.

She is one of the strongest people I know.

She has a great laugh.

I am truly blessed to have her as my daughter.

Happy Birthday Cookie!! I love you xoxo

June: It's Flying By

So, it's been a busy month. I might argue that June is the busiest month of the year. We still have 2 days of school left. Can I complain? Not really because when we had those 2 or 3 snow days this winter I was so happy to have a surprise snowy day off. I knew I wasn't going to be happy about it in June, but back in February, I was skipping around the house. Quite honestly, no matter if we had snow days or not, going to school after Memorial Day sucks. The teachers are pretty much done and the kids are really done. At least we have had a lot of outside time this week!!

This month we have,

celebrated my nephew's first birthday,

celebrated my brother's 40th birthday, (my uncle's birthday and Father's day!)

cheered B on at her 8th grade dance,

had our first outdoor dinner of the summer at Hazel's shanty,

been to Provincetown

and all the other daily stuff, like way too many end of the year projects, exams and such. I have also been thrown into the divorce process (don't recommend it) and have a new boyfriend (that I recommend). I still have a big effing smile on my face and we are going on 2+months.  I don't see myself getting tired of that any time soon.

B is 14

Today is B's 14th Birthday. I am not sure how I have a 15 and 14 year old, but somehow it has happened. I do know that I am lucky to have both of them.

Yesterday, I took B (and K) and 5 of her friends up to Boston for a day at Georgetown Cupcakes and Quincy Market. It was so much fun and a pleasure to be amongst them and K all day long. I noticed on the way up in the car that B has matured so much in a year. She is funny, concerned about her looks and thoughtful.

Today, I noticed the character that she brings to the table. Her good friend was taken off life support today. On her Birthday. He couldn't have known and she never would have picked this date for him., but sometimes life has another plan for you. God reminds you that you are not in charge, He is. This fact is hard enough for an adult and brutal for a child. Somehow, though, B has been so brave, so grown-up through it all. I have been asked questions, lots of questions, but have answered them as honestly and truthfully as I can.

It is not going to be a Birthday she soon forgets, but I have promised her that an angel will be watching out for her wherever she goes.

Happy 13th Birthday To My Wonderful Nephew J

OK, J, the moment you have been waiting for....... drum roll please..... a whole post about you!!!

You were an adorable little baby...

Who was born into a crazy band of gypsies...

Thankfully, you were able to pull yourself together when it counted, like the Chatham Bars Inn lunches....

Is that a devilish glint in your eye?

You are a great kid! And cute too :)

Except when you were in your gangsta phase.

Once I got you out of that saloon, you were able to straighten yourself out.

Pretty soon, this will be you on a street not a track.

So, Happy Birthday J!!  We are so happy to have you in our life! Your present includes your own bag of M&Ms so you can stop cutting into my supply for a day.

13! TaDah!

I love this smiling face,

I love that you are so strong and yet, still keep your toes pink.

I love that you love to swim (and the improvement in a year on the team? UNBELIEVABLY AWESOME!)

I love that the movie you made about erosion 2 years ago, somehow has 1500 hits on Youtube.

I love your sense of humor, I love that you are friends with your sister, I love your friends, I love your attitude and I love that you will still snuggle with me on the couch.

Don't forget all that now that you are a TEENAGER!

Happy Birthday Baby! I love you :)

Birthday gifts?

In this weekend's Boston Globe, there was an article on birthday parties. Not your typical article on where the latest place to have a party is, or the greatest theme or the most sought after present. The article was about how Gen Y and Gen X-ers have decided that their kids have too much already. The parents in the article were saying that they don't want their kids to receive useless gifts that their kids will play with for a day and then discard. So what they have gone and done is a few different things. Some have parties and then donate all the presents somewhere, some say "your presence is present enough" on the invites, and some suggest that the families should donate money toward a charity instead of bringing a gift.

OK, I get that our kids have a lot. However, many of these parents were doing this to 6 and 7 year olds and NOT telling them. One birthday girl asked her mom why there were only a few presents at her party and the mom distracted her until the party was over and then told her. One kid was looking at all the cool stuff she had gotten as it was being donated to a shelter. So while the moms are doing these fabulous things with the gifts (without the consent of the kid), they are spending 4-500 dollars on the parties. Aren't they being a little hypocritical giving to the needy, but trying to outdo each other in extravagance of parties? In and outside of Boston, it has become the in thing to be able to say, "oh, we don't have presents at our party or we donated $300 worth of presents to the homeless shelter at her last birthday, etc..".

B went to a birthday party last month. The invitation said, "Because we are in the middle of moving out of our house for the summer and into a very small rental, please limit gifts to a $10 gift card. The birthday girl will enjoy going on a mini shopping spree either this summer or in the fall when we move back into our home." I thought this was a great idea. It is hard enough to pack up your house for the summer rental season without getting 15 new toys to find storage for. And, basically the mom was giving the parents an out.... "please don't go crazy and feel like you have to spend $25 on my child, compete for the cutest present, and wonder if the kid already has what you have picked out." My friend, however, took some shit for this. Some people thought it was presumptuous of her for assuming kids were going to bring a gift and some thought she shouldn't assume people would spend $10 on a gift. She told her daughter beforehand. At first A wasn't thrilled about the idea, but the more she thought about it, the more she liked it. She got a wide range of cards (all $10), but a few to the same stores so she could double up. Because things were crazy that week, I took the opportunity to try something I had read about in Family Fun magazine some time ago. B and I made a certificate for a playdate that would include, a pony ride (remember we have horses), mini golf and ice-cream. I had decided that that would give her something to look forward to and not be like a regular playdate, but a little more special.

So, how do you guys feel about all this birthday stuff? Do you still buy presents? Is it all about gift cards? Have you experienced a party where you are asked NOT to bring presents? Let's hear it.....

What to write.....

Pondering things to write about tonight..... I thought I was going to write about how I got interviewed for the newspaper since I am running for school committee, then I thought about writing how B watched many episodes of America's Next Top Model (UGH), or I could have told you about how my dog and my sister's dog took off today for a 1/2 hour jaunt to who knows where while I frantically looked for them. But no, none of those will compare to what B just told me. (My birthday is tomorrow). "Mommy, I tried to make your card not like a death notice." HUH? "Yeah, I tried to make it not sound like something I would write on your grave stone."
me, "That's great, honey. Sweet dreams!"
