My Dad Can Be Funny (not on purpose)

K and I had dinner at my parent's house the other night. B was at a friends and the boys were all wrapped up in hockey. K and I alone at my parents is a very rare occasion. All I remember is that there was a lot of laughter and Olympics and wine, but the one pertinent story was from my dad.

He went to the doctor's recently for a check up and the nurses began by asking him how he was and if he had any problems. Well, things were good and he felt good, but he did have one problem.

He said, "Sometimes my leg will go numb.  It happens while I am shopping with my wife."

The nurses were hysterical and quite honestly so were K and I as he was reiterating the story. So we asked him to explain further.

Evidently when he and my mom shop in places like Kohls or TJMaxx, one of my Dad's legs fall asleep. My mom sends him to the men's department while she goes on her shopping mission and 9 times out of 10, after 15 minutes, one of my dad's legs falls asleep. K asked if it was the leg of the pocket that he kept his wallet in.

If he is puttering around the yard, he has no problem

If he is shoveling the driveway, he has no problem.

If he is golfing, he has no problem.

He only has this problem when he is. Shopping. With. My. Mom.

I do not have a punch line for this story, but I can tell you that we were laughing so hard at dinner, tears were rolling down our faces. And, yes, I mean all 4 of us. My mom even had her silent laugh going  which when that happens, K mimics and makes it all the more funny. I guess if you see a guy limping around the men's department of Kohls, please offer him a chair and a cup of strong black coffee.

Happy Anniversary!

My parents have been married for 411, 984 hours.

Otherwise known as 17, 167 days.

Otherwise known as 47 years.

That's a lot of time for 2 people to be married to each other.

A lot of things have changed too, and I don't just mean the color of their hair.

In 1964, gas was .30 cents a gallon and a 1st class stamp was .05 cents.

Lyndon B. Johnson was President and the St. Louis Cardinals won the World Series.

Movie tickets were $1.25 and you could see the likes of Goldfinger, Mary Poppins or My Fair Lady.

The Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show and Barbra Streisand won Album of the Year.

Theirs was an unlikely story of a girl from Winchester living in a Boston apartment  under an apartment of a boy from Medford. The girl from Winchester was a nosy neighbor and would always get in her upstairs neighbor's business.

Thank goodness she didn't let up because this unlikely pair have been each other's rocks for 47 years. Through good times and trying times, they have stuck like glue. And thank God for that because they wound up with 3 great kids and 3 fantastic granddaughters (so far).

Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad! Love you tons!

The Gym

I worked out with my parents today.

Yeah, let me give you the full picture.

My Dad has always been a runner or walker, skier, does exercises every morning type of guy. My mom on the other hand has avoided exercise like it might give her the plague her entire life. Well, ok, there was a time that she skied when she and my Dad were dating, but I think that was just to hook my Dad. Then there was the time she played basketball for a day and sprained her finger and that was that.

So, my little town has a community center and it has a cute little work out room in it. It is less than the cost of a pair of Uggs to join for the year. They joined yesterday and then said Happy early Birthday, we got you a membership too.

We all went today, together, at the same time, in our Olivia Newton John headbands and thongs and got "Physical".
What's with the fat guys in the picture?

I am allowed a little exaggeration, this is my story. They both hopped (that's a bit of a stretch) on the treadmills, so that left me with the eliptical. I have always been afraid of elipticals, but decided I had nothing to lose since we were the only ones in the gym. After the first 2 minutes of going backwards, I figured out how to go forward and actually didn't mind it.

Then my Mom asks me if I want her to show me the machines and how to work them. OK, very cute, but I am a gym rat from way back when people lifted rocks and stones instead of sitting on a sweet machine. So as I was reintroducing myself to these muscle burners, a man walks in and announces that he is new. Well you would think my parents had been at the gym for a year the way they jumped in to help the man. My mom was attached to some tortorous device, but insisted on giving the man directions on how to turn the "new person DVD" on from across the room. My Dad got the guy a chair so he could sit and watch and learn how to "work the room".

All and all a very fun time at the "gym". Hours later, my thighs are feeling a twinge of "hey, you did something to me today". We left the gym together and my Dad said that we ought to go 5 days a week and the look on my Mom's face was priceless.

Too bad I didn't have my camera.
