Happy 5th! (Or Parade Round Up)

Chatham celebrated it's 300th Birthday yesterday in style with a parade that must have been at least 2 hours long. This is my view from being on a float (actually I was walking inbetween our floats). It's totally not the best video, but it sure gives you the vantage point from being part of the parade. Hope you all had a fun, safe day!

We All Need a Feel Good Story

I joke about calling my town a hamlet. It is small. It is very small during the winter when there are no tourists milling about and not many stores open. The Cape is so small in the winter that things don't have to happen in your town to hear about them. At times it can be exhausting having everyone knowing your business, but at times like this past weekend, it was a Godsend.

A family in my hamlet, whom Matt has known since birth, I have known for 20 plus years and our children are friends, found out that their 12 year old son had brain cancer. This happened days before Thanksgiving and he was operated on days after. The entire family has been nothing but positive. The boy has been fighting a courageous battle and continues to today. He has had 2 surgeries, radiation, chemo all the while continuing his school work and learning everything there is to know about ipads and iphones.

This weekend, the Women of Fishing Families (WOFF), threw a fundraiser for the family. The mom is part of our group (WOFF) and it was surreal planning an event for her instead of with her. There are so many stories of giving, helping, planning and attending, but I wanted to tell you about one story in particular that will restore your faith in mankind.

A woman was talking about the fundraiser with her neighbor from another town. The neighbor's boys had just gotten a signed Adrian Gonzalez Red Sox shirt at a fundraiser the previous weekend. The dad paid about $300 to win it in an auction. The boys heard about the fundraiser for the boy their age who was battling cancer in their neighboring town. They gave their new and treasured shirt to our fundraiser and said, "We want it, but he needs it". The shirt went on the live auction with some Red Sox tickets and a dinner. The package went for $1000 and the woman who bought it is sending the boys back their shirt. She got thinking during the bidding that there was no way she was not going to win this so she could send the shirt back to the boys.

It gives me chills to witness beautiful acts like this. I was watching the news this morning and everything was negative. I said to B, "I want a channel that just tells the weather, sports and entertainment news." I think I will add feel good stories like this one to my new channel. Anyone want to run with this idea?

A Blond Walks Into a Firestation...

The blond theme is running rampant around here.... This story is not about me. It is about someone near and dear to my heart, but I will not out-her publicly. Let's call her Elizabeth...

Saturday night, Elizabeth woke up feeling dizzy. Elizabeth is prone to panic/anxiety attacks and had pretty much determined that she had a concussion and a number of deadly diseases which were causing the dizziness. Her husband eventually calmed her down enough to go back to sleep.

Sunday morning they woke up and she was still dizzy. Husband said, "I will take you to the emergency room", while Elizabeth said, "How about we just go to the fire station?".

This is an approximation of the phone call....

Fire station: Hello.
Elizabeth: Hi, um, I woke up feeling dizzy and was thinking I could possibly have a concussion and maybe could I come in and get looked at?
F.S.: We can come to you if that would be better.
Eliz: No, the baby needs a nap, so my husband can drive me and baby can sleep in the car.
FS: OKkkkkk
Eliz: I have a weird question for you though... is a certain fire fighter working?
FS: She's still in the building, but off duty.
Eliz: OK, that is good. She doesn't like me. We are neighbors and we have dog issues.
FS: Okay......Totally understand. Come on in.

Elizabeth, baby and husband go to FS. Husband drops off Elizabeth so he can drive around while baby sleeps.

FS(a little bit concerned): Did you husband just drop you off and leave?
Eliz: Yes, baby is sleeping in the back seat.
FS: So why don't you tell us what is going on.
Eliz: Well, yesterday was the Women of Fishing Families' Celebration at the Fish Pier and I hit my head while wearing a sumo wrestling blow up suit.

FS: Oooh, those suits are so cool!
Eliz: Yes, and there might have been some alcohol involved.
FS (smiling): Yeah, we kinda figured that. Did you pass out, see stars, etc...
Eliz: No, I didn't pass out. I also consumed 2 red bulls. And I am prone to anxiety.

Fire Station checks out Elizabeth and tells her to take it easy, but they don't think she has a concussion. She leaves the building and realizes that dear husband is not outside. She goes back into the fire station.

Eliz: Um, yeah. While all that was going on yesterday... I lost my phone. Could I use yours to call my husband to tell him I am all checked out?

Calls husband who says he is just about there, but really a mile away. She goes back outside to wait  until he gets there. Even though it is raining she stays outside because she can not embarrass herself further by walking back into Fire Station.

Today, she posts this on facebook: It's a Christmas Miracle - the cell phone has been found! Where it was found is too crazy to even admit but lets just say it was safe in a flower window box with a beautiful view of the ocean.

Yeah, just another blond moment.....

PS: That is her friend falling in the photo. I am not sure anyone got a shot of her fall.

Mustachio Bashio

The Women of Fishing Families put on a great fundraiser this month, if I do say so myself! We had 27 guys sign up to grow mustaches on February 13th and then they were judged on March 13th. The guys did not disappoint! Neither did B and I with our sweet stick on staches!

Erik and Mike show some impressive shaping skills!

Here is my BIL, Timmy, complete with shoe polish on his stache.
My other BIL, Dave, doing an impersonation of the cop in the Village People without even knowing it.This was the winner who had created anchors at the bottom of his stache and came complete with mustache comb.
The judges' choice went to Mr. T.

The Hulk stopped by and even ripped off his shirt to the delight of the 1 female judge and the girls in the crowd!
All in all, an amusing evening at The Red Nun!
