Whales: Where Art Thou

There are an abundance of right whales off the coast of Cape Cod right now. I heard that of the 500 or so in the world, about 1/2 of them are around Provincetown. For whatever reason, there is more than the usual amounts of krill and other little things that the whales like to eat. Being school vacation week, I had the opportunity to go to Ptown 3 times this week. I had my sister's  huge telephoto lens. I was ready to get the details of the whales as they leapt out of the water. I already saw my whale picture on the cover of National Geographic. I was prepared!

This is what I got:

Now I am sure that will not suffice for the National Geographic cover or really your viewing pleasure. The water was Caribbean blue today, so I took some second place pictures while I was waiting for my whale to surface.

The seagull cooperated.

Herring Cove parking lot is about half the size after the past 2 winters.

Also Herring Cove.

I love taking pics of laundry lines. Why? I do not know, but always have.

Look at the color of that water! If only it was warmer out....

Anyone want to go on a whale watch with me? I'll bring the camera and the Dramamine.

Pushing Spring

The calendar says that it is spring, but the air and surroundings say, "maybe not". Either way, we took a drive today to Provincetown (Ptown to locals). The sun was shining. It was probably in the 40's, but the snow and ice were melting. It felt really good to be outside without a hat and mittens. We walked out on a jetty that probably went for a mile. I would guess that we went more than half way. I had never been on this jetty before. It was really low tide so there were people digging for quahogs on the mudflats on either side of the jetty.

The seagulls had their tables on the flat rocks. The seagulls take a quahog or clam and drop it on the flat rocks so the shells break. Pretty ingenious and we wondered if it was a trial and error thing or if it was inbred to drop them on the flat rocks.

Doesn't that bottom right picture look like a butterfly?

The pier is another fun place to walk. At the end you can see the building with the Portuguese Fisherwomen pictures on it. All the little huts that take reservations for fishing or whaling trips or sell trinkets were still closed.

We were not really sure why this house was anchored out in the harbor. I don't think it is suppose to be there, but I am not sure where it drifted from if that were the case.

All in all, a stellar day with hopes that summer Sundays in Ptown are not too far off!

Sundays in My City

Unknown Mami

I have written about Provincetown a few times, but can only find one of those times here.  Anyway, my friend Faith and I, celebrated a day off of school on Friday with a trip to P-town. It takes close to an hour to get there. K and B both invited friends and Faith brought her son and daughter. (It was a FULL minivan!) Someday her son will appreciate the gift he was given to hang out with 7 girls, but lucky for Faith, I don't think it will be any time soon.

I had some brainstorm to do a scavenger hunt with the kids so they wouldn't be whining about the wind and that they were bored. To make it easy, I wrote the word, Provincetown, down the side of an index card, gave them a pen and put it in a big baggie. We split them up into 2 groups and told them to find (buy or take a picture) of something that begins with each of the letters. We let them go off for about an hour and a half and they had a blast! One group took all pictures and one group bought most of the things. Click on this picture to make it bigger and see some of the examples. I highly recommend this, they loved it!

Such a fun, beautiful day!
Happy Sunday!

Sundays in My City

Unknown Mami

Yesterday my mom, B and her friend A and I went to....
Ptown is the tip of Cape Cod. If you look at Cape Cod as an arm, Ptown is the hand, Chatham is the elbow and Falmouth is the armpit. (Sorry Falmouth). We went to Race Point Beach first.

As you can tell, it was a little windy and chilly, but beautiful nonetheless. We finally found the base of the Pilgrim Monument (trust me, we drove around and around). In the summer season you can climb to the top. We had to be satisfied with a picture from the bottom.
Provincetown's streets are very narrow. In the summertime, this street is hopping with people.

This is a buoy, lobster pot bench.

B and A having a whale of a time!

The fishing industry is very big in Ptown. The boats are mostly draggers and trawlers. I liked how this one was called Blue Skies, because it was a very blue sky day!

This is a warehouse on a dock that has pictures of women who have been important to the fishing industry.

B took a picture of me, sitting on the newest bench in town.

There you have it: a winter's tour of Ptown. I promise to come back in the summer and show you the difference!
