5 Things (the childhood edition)

Walking in the footsteps of my friend Melisa, I am doing a little meme that is going around the blog'o'sphere on 5 Things. Following in Melisa's footsteps, I am doing 5 things about my childhood. Feel free to play along, especially for all of you NaBloPoMo writers who need inspiration.

1. Most of my summers were spent on Ogunquit Beach in Maine. I am so happy that this picture portrays my rocking bikini and my bowl cut. BTW, we made dribble castles ALL. THE. TIME.

2.  My favorite stuffed animal was my Snoopy. I still have him, but he is not too stuffy anymore.

3. For one of my birthdays, my grandparents gave me a tricycle that was extra tall (I don't think it's the one in this picture). It was really cool (think raised truck/raised tricycle). Well, Joey Cagino, who was a few years older than me, rode it and broke it. Since I remember this, I must still be harboring some anger toward Joey Cagino....

3. Evidently, my love for chocolate started at an early age.

4. My first grade teacher was Mrs. Popolizio. I loved her (well, actually everyone did). We gave her a baby shower toward the end of 1st grade. She let us have a kiddie pool in our classroom with pond life in it. It was so cool! The thing that is even cooler? She reads my blog :)

There you go, a little walk down Sue's childhood lane. My mom has a ton of pictures of when we were little, so this may turn into a 10 or 15 thing meme about my childhood. November is a long month!

We Are a Team

I have not done a very good job assigning chores etc for my kids since forever. I live by the motto of "it's easier if I just do it myself and it will get done the right way." Now that we are a blended household, I need to get everyone on the same page. I cannot do it all anymore and still have sanity. So I am going to give this pitch at dinner tonight and see if anyone can relate...

Ok team, and yes, I am calling us a team because we are all living under the same roof. We do not have to be related or married to be on the same team. We have to work together to make our home a pleasant and comfortable place to live. When you are on a soccer team (and yes, all 4 of you have played soccer before so you can relate to my examples), you work with your teammates. If someone misses a pass down the field, someone else jumps in and gets the ball. That person does not usually rip the player, who missed, a new one. That person also does not think twice about helping out a teammate. We need to be better about this because I see our team divided or actually in pieces.

Multiple choice questions:

"Hey team member A, could you please empty the dishwasher?"
a. Sure coach, just let me finish this sentence on my homework and I will be right in.
b. I did it last time it's team member C's turn.
c. I have too much homework, I am way too busy.
d. I'll do it later (which means never).

If you do not know, the correct answer is a. If a coach asked you to jump into the game, would you refuse him/her? Would you whine? Would you conveniently forget?

When you remove your dish from the table, do you
a. put it on the counter?
b. put it near the sink, but not in it?
c. in the sink, but not rinsed off?
d. dump your trash, rinse your plate and put it in the dishwasher?

Pick d? You are correct and the perfect team player. Would you enter a soccer game and kick the ball half way to your teammate? Would you throw in a ball to the other team? Soccer or any team sport skills can be applied to our household.

When you are looking for your sweatshirt and you find it in the dryer, do you
a. take out your sweatshirt and close the door leaving the laundry for the next person to fold?
b. empty laundry onto laundry table, take your sweatshirt and go?
c. empty laundry onto laundry table, fold the clothes and take your sweatshirt?
d. empty laundry onto laundry table, fold the clothes, put on your sweatshirt, put the wet clothes in the dryer and a new load in the wash?

Well I would be happy with c but if you did d you would probably be team captain or the coach.  I am not sure how many of you are willing to be captain of our team. Just know, d, is what the coaches do all the time and someday when you have your own team, you will do it too.

As your coaches, we need to do a better job training you ,our team, to be exceptional. We do not want a losing record. We need team work, no whiners and a positive team spirit. If you need help on a certain job, then ASK US. We are your coaches, we know how to teach you to be the best you can be.

Here is just one example (it just happens to be the most recent):

When asked to clean the "common room" upstairs, we were met with a 2 day resistance. This did not make your coaches happy. When there is arguing amongst the coaches, the team suffers. Finally the chosen team member  went upstairs to "clean" said room.

Chosen team member considered this clean:

One of the coaches went upstairs and took 7 minutes this morning and "re-cleaned". This, alone was found under the couch....

This is the coach's version of clean.

Perhaps the chosen team member has never known what this coach's version of "clean" meant. By using these pictures or by asking a coach to show him/her how to clean, this problem could have been taken care of in less than 15 minutes. However, because the chosen team member did not think that this was his/her mess, there was a lot of whining and "why me?" involved. If your coach asked you to take the ball down the field and score a goal, would you? Or would you whine and say" it's not my turn" or "why do you always ask me?"

On the soccer field, if you are not a team player, you have consequences. You might have to warm the bench or miss a few games. You might get a penalty. If you are not a team player in this house, you will be penalized. Perhaps no phone, no car, EXTRA chores.... Your coaches can be very creative in the consequence department.

So let's all put our hands in and give a commitment to work together. Yes, there will be bumps along the way, but as your coaches, we will do our best to make everything as fair and as smooth as possible. We really like winning and we hope you do, too!

The Elsa Halloween

Halloween just passed.

Hmmm, why didn't I mention it sooner? I am not a big fan of Halloween which I have written about before. Therefore, my girls are not big fans of Halloween either. I swear I made Halloween fun when they were little. They always went trick or treating with their cousins in the best neighborhood, they sorted and traded their candy and went to sleep that night with smiles on their faces. I guess my "love" of Halloween is transparent now.

We still carve pumpkins, though. Well, we carved them this year at 4:30 on Halloween night, but they were spookily glowing in no time and I made pumpkin seeds, too.  That counts, right?

B and her friends getting in on the fun

At the elementary school where I work, it is tradition to have a parade of the kids (grade 2-4) downtown, while the younger children walk around the fire station. Our fire station is in the middle of being rebuilt so we jogged around the local infield once. It was perfect. Oh, what was I dressed as? A cowgirl because it was easy and comfy.

The funny thing was that out of the 100 or so children in the kindergarten and first grade, 50 or so are girls. There were 14 Elsa's out of that 50. Basically a third of the girls in K and 1st grade were Elsa. The librarian brought them all into the library and had them sing Let It Go which I so wish I could post here because it was adorable.

I never took pictures of my girls before they went to their respective parties, but I did get my niece and 2 of her besties (one of which was Elsa!).

Damn, it would have been a good week to buy Disney stock.....

Day Light Savings

Day 2 of NaBloPoMo and I am going to whine (not wine).

We turned the clocks back last night. Who doesn't love an extra hour of sleep, right? Yes, that is the best part of it. The unfortunate part is that pretty damn soon it will be dark at 4pm. Guess what time I get out of work? 3:45pm. Do you know what this means? No daylight for me in the afternoon.

I crave daylight.

I need daylight.

I look much hotter with a tan. (What?)

Getting dark early means many more hours fighting someone for the couch. Or the big comfy chair. Or a decent tv show that does not include blood, aliens or zombies.

Getting dark early means I am driving kids to after school activities in the dark.

Getting dark early means I want to hibernate. Curling up on the couch with a book and some popcorn?! Who needs to dust, vacuum, do the laundry, make dinner....oh, wait, I do. So much for hibernating.

So, if you need me between now and March, I will be pretending that my fireplace is the sun. You can get a tan from a gas fireplace, right?

NaBloPoMo

NaBloPoMo November 2014

God help me, I signed up to blog every day in November.

It was because Melisa pressured me.

No, actually she agreed to send a wine truck of inspiration to my house every day at 5.

No, OK, I did it to myself.

I really miss blogging and I know there is at least one person out there who misses me writing (Hi, Uncle Dick).

So to give you a little background, in case you are new here, my name is Sue and I live on Cape Cod. My life could be described as a soap opera at times, hence the blog name. I have 2 teenage girls and am divorced after a 15 year marriage to a commercial fisherman. The girls and I currently live with my boyfriend and his 2 sons (part time) right across the street from my sister and brother-in-law and their 4 year old who provides us with plenty of laughs. My parents live about a mile away and my brother and his family are the only hold outs that still live in our hometown outside of Boston.

I love the beach, the outdoors in general and M&Ms. K, my oldest daughter, is a senior and is looking at colleges which means that along with my full time teaching job, I have another part time job helping her look for colleges. Can you say Common Ap essay, anyone? We're working on it, I swear!!

Welcome aboard to my crazy life. Feel free to browse previous posts because I have been blogging since 2008! Almost 7 years, phew! See you tomorrow!!

5-0

It was my parents' 50th Wedding Anniversary this weekend. My brother, sister and I hemmed and hawed about what to do to celebrate a milestone that is a GREAT feat in this day and age. My mom simplified it by saying that she wanted family photos done by a professional (not me). So I gave my friend Amy at Amy Dykens Photography a call and she agreed to take on the challenge. We met yesterday afternoon and I saw a few of the pics she took which are, of course, awesome. Because she was taking care of the "official" pictures, I could take some of the "unofficial" pictures. The unofficial pictures are what you can see now.

I love that my parents created our great family. We have all had our share of ups and downs, but they have been the rock through it all. I also love that we can have fun together, be silly, but protect each other's backs at the same time. Heads up Grandkids, you can plan the 75th festivities!!

Match Vs Kindergarten

Dating websites have it all wrong.

Kindergartners might be on to something.

At least 2 Kindergartners had the dating thing down today: the second day of Kindergarten of the school year.

I did not notice any love blooming yesterday. I was purely concentrating on which name belonged to which kid and counting to make sure they were all where they were suppose to be. This morning was a refresher on names because the darn kids wore different outfits to school today.

Because I am a Special Education Assistant, I spend a lot of time in the regular classroom modifying things for my student(s). I do a lot of observing. In music class today, I thought I saw one of the boys lean over and kiss the cheek of the girl sitting next to him. It happened so fast, I second guessed myself and decided that maybe it did not happen.

It was fine for me to be blissfully in denial, until all the kids were sitting on the rug at the end of the day. They were taking turns packing up their backpacks, lunch boxes, etc. When (let's say) Julia left to go pack up her bag, her suitor (we'll call him Conner) was talking to a boy next to him. Conner looked over to where Julia was sitting and said, "Hey where did my girlfriend go?". That's when I knew, I had seen a kiss in music. Now, I specifically watched harder. (Can one watch harder? Perhaps I paid more attention, but basically my eyes were pinned on them.)

She came back from packing up and sat down right next to him. Then she moved a little bit to the side and patted the place beside her for him to move over!! I couldn't believe it: SHE WAS FLIRTING WITH HIM. He did and then the teacher told them to separate. they did, then inched back toward each other. Then they tried to hold hands. Separated again.

It was time to line up, some kids in the bus line, some in the parent pick up line. As fate would have it, Julia was taking the bus and Conner was being picked up. I watched Connor as he lined up behind Julia INSISTING that he was a bus kid today. I had to admire his spunk. He was doing all he could to hang with Julia for as long as he could.

So, there you have it people in the dating world. All it takes is a simple surprise kiss in music class and bells will be ringing all day long.
